If you're a parent of a young child, you've probably been concerned about the mysterious hepatitis outbreak. Just in the U.S., there have been at least 109 cases and five deaths.

It's gotten serious enough that the CDC has just issued an alert. Here are some things you should know:

The outbreak is global. There have been about 340 documented cases in 20 countries.

The cause remains unknown. The CDC is investigating exposure to other viruses and toxins, but the cause of hepatitis often remains unknown.

The hepatitis vaccine doesn't protect against this virus. This isn't the common hepatitis A, B or C.

It doesn't appear to be related to COVID-19 or the vaccine. Most of the cases are in children ages two to five, who haven't had the vaccine yet.

If you spot symptoms, call your pediatrician. These include fever and fatigue, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, joint pain, jaundice and changes to the color of urine or stool.
