Tequila: That's Not Really A 'Worm'

'That's What Tequila Does' is the latest hit from Jason Aldean. It's also the latest on a pretty significant list of songs about Tequila and its offspring The Margarita. From 'Margaritaville' from Jimmy Buffett to Dan + Shay's 'Tequila' it's a very popular subject for a song. 'You and Tequila' from Kenny Chesney, 'One Margarita' from Luke Bryan and 'Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off' from Joe Nichols are among the favorites. No list is complete without The Eagles 'Tequila Sunrise' or The Champs 'Tequila'. Also look up 'Tequila Sheila' by Bobby Bare, 'Tequila Talkin' by Lonestar, and 'Mas Tequila' from Sammy Hagar. While this list is not meant to represent all of the Tequila songs ever recorded, I will say these are among the best and I love them all. But for the life of me I don't remember a lyric that mentions the worm. I could be wrong, but the point is it's just as well, because it's not actually a worm. - Matt Appleby

It's always been a big deal to drinking your way to the bottom of a bottle of tequila and drink the worm, or so I've heard. But it's not really a worm. Guess what, tequila fans -- you can't eat the worm! That's because the squirmy things at the bottom of the bottle aren't worms at all. Scientists with a lot of time on their hands took four years to study hundreds of bottles of tequila and mescal and found that the DNA of all the “worms” actually matched agave redworm moths. Infant moths are considered caterpillars, which explains the look.
