On October 4th, a nationwide Emergency Alert Test made everyone's phones buzz and beep, but it also managed to get some people in hot water.

Most Americans were told in advance about the EAS test and knew to expect it, but not the country's Amish communities. Ordinarily it wouldn't matter to the community, whose members live without modern conveniences like electricity, cars, and cell phones. But when the alert went out, some Amish people got into a lot of trouble because they had phones they were hiding and weren't expecting the alert because they hadn't followed the news. Being caught with any modern devices could get people shunned by their community. (Independent)
