Breakfast is mourning a huge loss today as William Post, the man credited with inventing the Pop Tart, has died at the age of 96.
In the '60s, Bill Post was working as a plant manager for the Keebler Company when he was approached by Kellogg's executives and asked if he could create a shelf-stable toaster pastry to be sold in grocery stores. That led to the introduction of Pop Tarts in 1964. It started with four flavors -- strawberry, blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon and apple-currant. There are now as many as 30 different flavors available.
