And The Nominees For Best Picture Are...

The Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences Presents "Meet The Oscars"

The Academy Awards will be handed out Sunday night and my wife and I will watch the televised ceremony. Often times, by the end of the broadcast we say to each other "Well, there's another three hours we'll never get back" or "Next year, let's not do this" or even "That guy/girl made a terrible host!" This year is a little different. We've actually seen two of the movies that are nominated for best picture: 'Elvis' and 'Top Gun - Maverick'. And we liked them both! Austin Butler, who portrayed Elvis Presley, could take home best actor. While 'Top Gun - Maverick' is fantastic, I never dreamed it would get nominated for Best Picture let alone have a chance to win it. It doesn't seem like Oscar material because box office blockbusters tend to get ignored come awards night. TG/M could grab some technical awards for editing, sound, cinematography, etc. Beyond those two, I've not seen any other nominees.

These are the 10 movies nominated for Best Picture this year:

  • All Quiet on the Western Front
  • Avatar: The Way of Water
  • The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Elvis
  • Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • The Fabelmans
  • Tár
  • Top Gun: Maverick
  • Triangle of Sadness
  • Women Talking

Our part-Irish heritage says I would enjoy 'The Banshees of Inisherin'. Our love for Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan (the actor who played the little boy Short Round in 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom') tells us to give 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' a chance sometime soon. It's been doing very well at other awards shows this year. We're also a fan of Spielberg so we'll eventually check out 'The Fabelmans'. The rest? We'll take a hard pass on those.

So pop some popcorn and enjoy as Hollywood pats itself on the back (and sometimes slaps someone in the face) this Sunday night. But don't stay up too late. You'll already lose an hour that day. Damn you Daylight Saving Time! Damn you all to Hell!
